Observed and criticized by his father, a young HSU, Li-hsien was painting. Seeing the painting handed in later, the teacher praised the young boy for his amazing work, without knowing that the painting was done by the father on the boy’s behalf. With the teacher’s encouragement and affirmation, HSU accidentally opened up his interest in the art which later becomes his life time career.
HSU, Li-hsien dedicates most of his time to the production of public artworks, while creating his own personal works only at leisure time. Pressed for time, when constituting sculptures, HSU often directly sculptures the stones according to their natural shapes, textures, and lines without first making clay sculptures. HSU’s works vividly convey the themes intended with lively gesture presentation, as well as they manifest his sharp craftsmanship and seem granted with spirits. From start to finish, his works seem due to natural gifts and finished just perfect!
HSU, Li-hsien expresses great passion in painting and what it stands for. Once at an exhibition in Kaohsiung, a primary school teacher loved one particular painting, yet requested to pay for HSU’s painting in installments due to his tight budget. Unfortunately, a fire of years later at that teacher’s house burnt off all the teacher’s collections including HSU’s painting. As soon as HSU heard of the accident, he immediately offered his new painting as gift to the teacher. According to HSU, it is more precious for the teacher to buy the painting with his humble salary, in comparison to other buyers with abundant money. Further, HSU describes artists as icebergs, where the ice tips symbolize any work presentations, whereas under parts of the icebergs are metaphorically described as artists’ humanistic cultivation; without it, works will have no root souls just as ice tips have no bases.

According to Zen Buddhism, "Worry is a catalyst of enlightenment." Mentally, I have tried to manifest, through my sculpture works, my inner self catalyst. Practically, steel ropes combined with stone sculptures are the main ideological style of my art creations; where steel ropes symbolize the invisible rulings to a life, to a destiny, and raw stones symbolize the obstinate nature. While the perseverance contends against the rulings, my inner self constantly changes through the realization of awareness, awaking, and enlightenment. Gradually, the strength of my life has been built up by discovering all potentials life has to offer, internally, externally, intangible, or tangible. Finally, “absolute freedom and equality” is what I have concluded after having grown through rulings to life. Without which I would not become a contender.
Through the arts of stone sculpture, my most sincere understanding toward life is fully presented. It is my great trill to be motivated by what I believe, the true universal values, and sculpture onto artworks my eternal quest for the meaning of life and inner spirit.
